Rebirth of Mr. Satan

Mark had the old Mr. Satan mask 3D-scanned and using his new CNC machine created the new Mr. Satan out of a solid block of steel. The whole thing is 300 lbs maybe slightly less after the back is hollowed out for a flame thrower.

It will be shown at an art show in Miami next month. More details on that event to follow.

Jack Davis Appreciation

Recently SOMARTS director and SRL friend Jack Davis suffered a heart attack. He is recuperating and SRL extends best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery and continued good health to Jack. SRL long-time crew member John Law writes this testimonial in appreciation for all that Jack has done for the S.F. art community.

For those wishing to keep up with the inner workings of SRL show production, I’ll be posting photos and videos often, as well as news and machine progress on the official SRL San Jose show page here. No name as of yet -informally we’re calling it Dante’s Inferno/6 Flags Over Hell but Mark will bless it with a proper name closer to the show. Check that page periodically for updates though this has been the first time in a long time that we are doing a large, pre-planned, permitted, local show and so it amuses me that we’re actually posting details so early on!

Details
Day: Friday, August 11 2006
Time: 10:30pm (or pyro-clock)

This show produced in conjunction with Zero One/ISEA‘s 13th International Symposium on Electronic Art

UPDATE: We got our fire permits yesterday! The show will go on!

4th of July Festivities at SRL

The shop is in full swing gearing up for August’s ISEA show in San Jose

Aside from the assortment of the usual explosion experiments at the SRL compound on a holiday such as this, it was also a chance to bring out two machines for practice/testing.

The Inchworm with Mark Pauline giving lessons to operators Karen Marcelo and Liisa Pine and son Jake Eddie’s first time control of a SRL machine (which he calls BigBug)!

And the V-1 that Mark and Doug Sutton tested which is a replica of a WWII buzz bomb engine which was also the first guided missile.

More images and videos from Karen Marcelo, Violet Blue, Scott Beale, and Jake Appelbaum

Videos from Karen Marcelo:
Mark Pauline operating the V1
Mark Pauline shows son Jake what the Inchworm can do
Kevin Binkert, Doug Sutton, Mark Pauline test the V1
Inchworm crunches a pallet

Stay tuned to this site as more videos and pictures from that day will be posted shortly!
